Terminology Dictionary

Application Programming Interface (API) - a set of rules and methods that let one program communicate with another program or service.

Backdoor- A backdoor attempts to gain access to a computer system or encrypted information bypassing the usual security mechanism of the system.

Bandwidth - The measurement of data that can be transmitted from transmitter to reciever

Centralization - When a singular entity is in charge of holding the information and transactions

Cookies - stores the information, including your session id, interests, banking details, and account details in the form of packets

Decentralization - When an entire network as the same record or data. Transactions are dealt democratically via the systems.

Domain Name System (DNS) - Similar to a phone book. They have URLS and the IP addresses associated with them

Human layer Security- Focuses on educating and training individuals to protect people from digital crimes.

HTTP/HTTPS- Hypertext Transfer Protocol (secure)

Internet - Portmanteau of Interconnected network. It refers to a network that spans globally

IP Address - Internet Provider address, Numerical label used to identify a network interface in an IP network

Internet service provider (ISP) - Connected with other ISPs, Allows access to the internet

Malware - Malicious software. Software made with the purposes of damaging systems

Networks - A group of devices connected in order to communicate with each other

Phishing - is a type of cyberattack that uses fraudulent emails, text messages, phone calls or websites to trick people into sharing sensitive data, downloading malware or otherwise exposing themselves to cybercrime.

Rate Limiting - Limiting the amount of requests per second from one IP address

Ransomware - a form of malware that holds important files for a ransom

Session - The communication between two systems, which remain active until the user ends the communication.

Spoofing - The act of disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source

Social engineering - a Range of activities geared towards (attempting to, or) exploiting human behavior or error to gain unauthorized access

SQL - Structured Query Language

SSL - Secure Socket layer

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - Also known as a weblink, specifies the location of a resource on a computer network and a mechanism for retrieving it.

Viruses- require human action to trigger

WAN - Wide area Network, requires On-ramps to connect

Website/Webpages - A document made up of text, hyperlinks, and images

Worms- no need for human action. does network propagation

XML - A widely used coding language used in data storage and communication
